    • William S. Sanders was a blacksmith by trade and enlisted in the Union Army on December 28, 1861, four months after his younger brother James enlisted. He enlisted in the same Company and Regiment as his brother (company A, 23rd Regiment, Missouriinfantry Volunteers) in fact, the only differences on their service records are their name and height. William was two inches taller than his younger brother. William put his age as 28 on his enlistment papers, but was actually 33. Accordingto his pension records, William was part of a forced march from Chillicothe (Livingston County), Missouri, to Richmond (Ray County), Missouri in February of 1862. Evidently, the effects of the march resulted in great fatigue and Williamdeveloped typhoid fever. He was sent to a hospital in St. Louis and died there on April 26, 1862.
